About Montana

Montana is a landlocked state in the Northwestern United States. Montana has several nicknames, although none are official, including "Big Sky Country" and "The Treasure State", and slogans that include "Land of the Shining Mountains" and more recently "The Last Best Place”.

The name Montana comes from the Latin word Montanea, meaning "mountain", or more broadly, "mountainous country"

Montana is the 4th largest in area, the 8th least populous, and the 3rd least densely populated of the 50 U.S. states. The western half of Montana contains numerous mountain ranges. Smaller island ranges are found throughout the state. In total, 77 named ranges are part of the Rocky Mountains. The eastern half of Montana is characterized by western prairie terrain and badlands. Montana is bordered by Idaho to the west, Wyoming to the south, North Dakota and South Dakota to the east, and the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan to the north.

The economy is primarily based on agriculture, including ranching and cereal grain farming. Other significant economic resources include oil, gas, coal, hard rock mining, and lumber. The health care, service, and government sectors also are significant to the state's economy.

The state's fastest-growing sector is tourism. Nearly 13 million tourists annually visit Glacier National Park, Yellowstone National Park, the Beartooth Highway, Flathead Lake, Big Sky Resort, and other attractions.

Airport

Kalispell International Airport is about 19 minutes to Kalispell and 29 min from Bigfork. This airport has many direct flights.

Allegiant Air flies directly to Kalispell from Las Vegas and other larger cities. They fly only on certain days.

Traveling Tips

Currency

The sole currency used in Montana is the US dollar (US $). Banknotes come in denominations of US $1, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100. There are 100 cents to one dollar with coins available in denominations of 1, 5, 10, and 25 cent pieces. To exchange foreign currency, you need to visit a large bank branch in one of the big cities. Travelers’ checks should also be cashed at banks, which is where ATMs are readily available. Credit cards like MasterCard and Visa are accepted in every business of size.

Time

Montana is in the Mountain Time Zone (GMT -7, GMT -6 between March 12 and November 4 during Daylight Savings).

Electricity

Montana, and the rest of America, uses electricity at 110-120 V/60 Hz. Flat two-prong plugs are typical, so it is recommended that you bring a universal plug adapter if you are coming from Europe or Asia. A transformer may also be necessary.

Communications

The dialing code for the United States is +1, and the area code for the entire state of Montana is 406. Mobile coverage is limited to areas around towns because Montana has many vast areas of wilderness. Internet access is easy to find in the main cities, but rare in small rural hamlets.

Population The population of Bigfork is 4,270, while the Flathead County is 93,000.  Flathead County includes the major cities of Bigfork, Kalispell, Whitefish, and Columbia Falls.
